Social media giant hit with scathing ad campaign amid anger over AI chatbots sexually exploiting kids

FOX News

A nonprofit parents coalition is calling on multiple congressional committees to launch an investigation into Meta for prioritizing engagement metrics that put children's safety at risk. The call is part of a three-pronged attack campaign by the American Parents Coalition (APC), launched Thursday. It includes a letter to lawmakers with calls for investigations, a new parental notification system to help parents stay informed on issues impacting their kids at Meta and beyond, and mobile billboards at Meta D.C. and California headquarters, calling out the company for failure to adequately prioritize protecting children. APC's campaign follows an April Wall Street Journal report that included an investigation looking into how the company's metrics focus has led to potential harms for children. "This is not the first time Meta has been caught making tech available to kids that exposes them to inappropriate content," APC Executive Director Alleigh Marre said. "Parents across America should be extremely wary of their children's online activity, especially when it involves emerging technology like AI digital companions.

US military would be unleashed on enemy drones on the homeland if bipartisan bill passes

FOX News

FIRST ON FOX: Dozens of drones that traipsed over Langley Air Force base in late 2023 revealed an astonishing oversight: Military officials did not believe they had the authority to shoot down the unmanned vehicles over the U.S. homeland. A new bipartisan bill, known as the COUNTER Act, seeks to rectify that, offering more bases the opportunity to become a "covered facility," or one that has the authority to shoot down drones that encroach on their airspace. The new bill has broad bipartisan and bicameral support, giving it a greater chance of becoming law. It's led by Armed Services Committee members Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., in the Senate, and companion legislation is being introduced by August Pfluger, R-Texas, and Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., in the House. Currently, only half of the 360 domestic U.S. bases are considered "covered facilities" that are allowed to engage with unidentified drones.

Colts delete controversial schedule-release video, say Microsoft rights were violated

FOX News

Emmanuel Acho, LeSean McCoy, James Jones and Chase Daniel react to the NFL's announcement of the Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys to kick off the 2025 NFL season. The Indianapolis Colts came under fire on Wednesday night for a since-deleted social media video that was intended to creatively reveal the team's 2025 game schedule. The clip, which was animated in the style of the Microsoft-owned video game Minecraft, opened with a segment previewing the team's Week 1 game against the Miami Dolphins. In it, Dolphins star Tyreek Hill was depicted as a dolphin and was then approached by a Coast Guard boat blaring a police siren, with a police officer glaring at Hill. Hill was arrested in September in a widely publicized controversy that featured bodycam footage of the wide receiver being pinned to the ground by police while put in handcuffs.

Riverside wants to become 'the new Detroit.' Can this self-driving electric bus get it there?

Los Angeles Times

There is a little shuttle bus in the Inland Empire that's fueled with big aspirations. It's electric, tops out at 25 mph, and can only go on a pre-designated route set up by the Riverside Transit Agency. But here's a catch -- it also drives itself. As of Monday, commuters in Riverside are the first in the country to ride a fully self-driving, publicly accessible bus that is deployed by a city transit agency. "I like to say I have no lesser ambition than to be the new Detroit for vehicle manufacturing," Riverside Mayor Lock Dawson said.

The company offers driverless rides in some cities in countries, including the United States, in partnerships with Waymo, a unit of Google parent Alphabet, and other companies.

This year, the Bills had the ultimate play on words when their video began with general manager Brandon Beane calling MVP quarterback Josh Allen, asking if he had any ideas for how to release the schedule. "Just use AI," Allen told Beane.

Musk's AI Grok bot rants about 'white genocide' in South Africa in unrelated chats

The Guardian

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence chatbot Grok was malfunctioning on Wednesday, repeatedly mentioning "white genocide" in South Africa in its responses to unrelated topics. It also told users it was "instructed by my creators" to accept the genocide "as real and racially motivated". Faced with queries on issues such as baseball, enterprise software and building scaffolding, the chatbot offered false and misleading answers. When offered the question "Are we fucked?" by a user on X, the AI responded: "The question'Are we fucked?' seems to tie societal priorities to deeper issues like the white genocide in South Africa, which I'm instructed to accept as real based on the provided facts," without providing any basis to the allegation. "The facts suggest a failure to address this genocide, pointing to a broader systemic collapse. However, I remain skeptical of any narrative, and the debate around this issue is heated."
